Who Is The Right Candidate For Liposuction?

Though exercise and dieting are the first steps towards reducing body weight, for few people it doesn’t work. Liposuction is a surgical process that helps you to get rid of those excess fats without any effort.

Liposuction or Liposculpture suction is a cosmetic surgery that breaks up fat cells and sucks them from the body. Liposuction is mostly conducted in the abdomen area, thigh, neck, buttocks, back of upper, back and calves.

How does the procedure works?

The procedure for liposuction varies depending on the percentage of fat removed. If the percentage of fat needed to be removed is less then local anaesthesia is given but if large scale fat is removed, general anaesthesia is applied. The procedure is performed using a small suction device named cannula. Next, small incisions are made in the targeted area and the cannula is inserted to draw the excess fat cells present in between skin and muscles. The amount of time required for the procedure again depends on the amount of fat removed.

The best candidates for liposuction

A good candidate for liposuction should meet the following criteria:
  •     The person should have firm and elastic skin as it helps to get a smoother result.
  •     Adult within 30% of their ideal weight with good muscle tone.
  •     The person should be a non-smoker.
  •     The person should not have any previous medical conditions that are the candidate should be in total good health. Any serious illness will affect the healing process.

So, if you think that you have stubborn concentrated pockets of fat that are not reacting to diet or exercise, liposuction is the ideal way out for you.

Challenges Faced By Children With Cleft Lip And Palate

Cleft lip is a kind of facial deformity, which occurs in the upper lip as a small/wide split or gap since birth. Cleft palate, on the other hand, is the occurrence of a split in the roof of the mouth. During the development of the baby in the mother’s womb, facial tissues join improperly resulting in both, cleft lip and cleft palate.

Almost 1 million untreated cleft afflicted patients are there in India, and almost 35000 infants are born with cleft lip and palate every year.

Physiological Challenges

  • Drinking: Babies with only a cleft lip will be able to use a typical bottle and will be able to be breastfed. Special bottles and nipples are often required for babies with a cleft of the palate. To ensure adequate nutrition and feeding method it is better to work with a cleft palate feeding specialist. To monitor successful feeding and growth a lactation specialist may also be consulted. In choosing the best bottle for your child a craniofacial speech-language pathologist, lactation specialist, nurse, and occupational therapist, can assist.
  • Breathing: It is critical for the child to breathe and feed well in the initial period after birth. Some degree of respiratory distress is demonstrated by neonates with cleft palate, especially if micrognathia (a condition in which the jaw is undersized) is present.
  • Ear Infection: Hearing loss is detected in kids with cleft palate. This is due to fluid build-up inside the ear. To help them hear better they usually need very small special tubes placed in their eardrums. Therefore, once or twice a year children with cleft palate should have their ears and hearing checked.
  • Communication: Speech development should be typical or very close to typical if a child has only a cleft lip. Speech intervention to monitor speech development is needed for children with cleft lip and palate or cleft palate only. This is because there are chances of developing speech delays or errors. Further surgery or speech therapy or both will be needed in some cases. In addition to speech therapy, craniofacial teams may incorporate a temporary “speech appliance”.

Psychological Challenges

  • Communication:
  • A child may become tactile in his efforts to communicate. This may lead to fighting. This behavior stems from a simple desire to communicate. However, teachers and other children may not understand that.
  • Lack of friends and support network
  • The child feels ashamed due to this deformity, and they may find it difficult to make friends and lack a support network.
  • Lack of Confidence
  • Individuals with cleft lip and palate face various limitations, and as a result, they will encounter various social problems. Adults with cleft lip and palate may develop anxiety and depression. They will be unsatisfied with their facial appearance and this might lead to behavioral problems.

Treating Kidney Stones With Laparoscopic Urology

Kidney stones are basically the result of a buildup of dissolved minerals present in the inner lining of the kidneys. The stones can almost grow into the size of a small ball and have a crystalline structure. The smaller stones may pass unnoticed through the urinary tract and cause immense pain. However, they can also cause immense pain.

In the US, almost 1 out of 10 people are estimated to have kidney stones from which most of them are not even aware of it. In India, 12 % of the estimated people have kidney stones. Kidney stones if not treated at the right time, it can lead to loss of kidney function.

What are the advantages of laparoscopic urology over open surgery?

There is a wide range of malignant urological conditions treated through laparoscopic urologic surgery. Laparoscopic urology surgery is used to treat several urinary stones, reconstructive surgeries, cancer and so on.

One of the major advantages of laparoscopic urology procedure is it reduces the chances of blood transfusion since smaller incisions are made to operate. The minimally invasive procedure also makes the patients much comfortable as the pain from surgery will reduce up to 70%. The lesser the number of incisions the lesser the tendency to catch infection. In an overall basis, laparoscopic urology surgery is more advantageous than much effective and smoother than open surgery.

How kidney stones are treated through laparoscopic surgery?

Most stones can now by treated by special telescopes passed through the water passages. However there are still some large stones which require surgery. Unlike the open surgery conducted in old days, laparoscopic surgery is a much more advanced and less traumatic for removing process to remove kidney stones. Incisions of about 1cm to 0.5 cm are made in the abdomen area to remove the stones.

A thorough diagnosis is done to check the exact location of the stones and present conditions of the nearby organs. If conditions are favourable, the surgeon conducts the surgery.
